The strip of hair along the spine is the second clue, since adult guard hairs appear there early too. When Does a Golden Retriever’s Coat Stop Changing?

Texture keeps developing a little longer. Feathering on the tail, legs, and chest fills in through the second year, and those longer furnishings often stay a shade lighter than the body. Seasonal shedding will change how full the coat looks twice a year, but not its color.
